An accused scammer who defrauded a religious man out of Sh400,000 by falsely claiming he could sell a fake container was arraigned in a Kibera court yesterday.
According to the court, Martin Ochieng allegedly scammed Pastor Eric Mwangi of Joshua Generation Church in September 2021 in Kilimani, Nairobi, Nairobi county.
The merchant allegedly promised to be in a position to transport a container to the preacher, which he knew was false.
The accused disputed the charges, and Kibera Magistrate Jacqueline Ojwang freed him on an Sh500 000 surety bond and an Sh250 000 cash bail.
He denied guilt in court, and court prosecutor Brenda Maiyo did not oppose his release on bond.
Ojwang ordered that the matter be set for a pre-trial hearing on June 30.
According to the prosecution, the church wanted to buy a container and contacted Ochieng, who pretended to be the director of a container manufacturing company.
The prosecution indicated the accused vowed to furnish the church with the stated container for Sh400,000, and they agreed on the price.
He got the money after church officials came to his company in Embakasi and introduced himself as the director.
Following the event, the situation was reported to Kilimani police, and he was later captured.
