Prisons Commissioner Brigadier John Warioba, who confirmed her death, said Wanini died at the hospital while surrounded by family members.
“On my own behalf and of the Kenya Prisons Service, I wish to convey my heartfelt condolences to the family and the Kenya Prisons fraternity as I join them at this moment of grief,” he said in a statement.
Kireri had served the Kenya Prisons Service from 1982 when she was enlisted as a cadet officer.
“She was a gallant, dedicated, selfless and committed officer. Her illustrious career saw her serve the service in various capacities,” Warioba added.
In due order, Warioba stated that a statement on burial preparations will be issued.
Wanini Kireri, the first woman Prisons Commandant died on May 31, 2022.
