Muslim leaders countrywide have taken the opportunity to call for peaceful campaigns to mark the end of Ramadhan.
The celebrations mark the end of the holy month of Ramadhan after the moon was sited at Ndambwe and Tchundwa in Lamu county.
“We Muslims we love peace and we are calling upon all Kenyans to desist from violence during this electioneering period,” said a Muslim Sheikh.
“Three people have sighted the moon, they have been interrogated by a Kadhi in Lamu, who has confirmed the same. They are trustworthy people and we, as the committee, are convinced that the moon has been sighted,” said Sheikh Muhdhar.
President Uhuru Kenyatta led the nation to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr.
Uhuru in his statement called for embracing of truth and unity especially in the electioneering period. Uhuru went ahead to ask Muslims to pray for the country.
He urged Muslims to live to the calling of the season and use the season to help the less fortunate.
“Even though the Holy Month of Ramadhan has come to an end, I urge all Muslims to keep praying for the country as we head towards elections. Let us remember we are one people and continue to encourage one another to contribute to peace and unity amongst us. This will ultimately ensure our country remains the great nation that we are all proud of. May Allah, the Most Merciful and Gracious, grant you peace, health, and joy on this day,” he said
Deputy President William Ruto in a tweet wished the Muslim faithful a Happy and Blessed Idd-ul-Fitr paying for their acts of faith to be rewarded.
ODM leader Raila Odinga went ahead to wish Muslims a peaceful celebration hoping their prayers to be answered during the holy month be answered.
Chief Justice Martha Koome took the opportunity to send a message of peace, love, and happiness to the Muslim faithful as they mark Eid-ul-Fitr.
