The Ministry of Education has been allocated a huge share of the Sh3.3 trillion in the 2022/2023 fiscal year budget presented today at Parliament Buildings by Treasurer Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yatani.
The Treasury proposed Sh525.9 billion to the Ministry of Education. From the amount allocated, Sh295 billion is to be absorbed at Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and Sh106 billion to be absorbed in Early learning and basic education.
This year’s allocation has increased from 2021/2022 financial year, where the ministry was allocated Sh503.9 billion.
To support the transition from primary to junior secondary education under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), Sh4 billion has been set aside for the construction of classrooms, to support school infrastructure development and ensure safe learning in schools.
Also, Sh2.8 billion has been allocated for primary and secondary school infrastructure.
The Treasury set aside Sh1.8billion for construction and equipping of technical training institutions and vocational training centres.
Further, Sh1. billion has been set aside to increase access and improvement for the quality and technical and vocational education and training programs under the East Africa Skills Transformation and Regional Integration Project.
Others proposed allocation to the education sector include, Sh91.2 billion for University Education, Sh15.8 billion to the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB), Sh6.8 billion has gone to Kenya Secondary Education Quality Improved Projects and Sh5.2 billion has been capitalized for the TVET students.
More allocation has been channeled to Technical, Vocational Education Training and Entrepreneurship where they have been allocated Sh527 million, Sh971 million for promotion of Youth Employment and vocational training and Sh323 million has gone to the National Research Fund.
