The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission is currently pursuing the forfeiture of approximately Kshs 25 Billion by public officers found to own unexplained wealth.
Speaking while appearing before the Senate Justice, Legal Affairs and Human Rights Committee EACC Chairperson Eliud Wabukula said the commission has averted loss of Sh30.4 billion over the same period.
Additionally, commission has completed investigations on corruption offences worth Sh1.2 billion involving nine current and former governors.
“In the last 5 years, EACC has concluded 1000 investigations on corruption and related offences. Examples of high impact cases involved 9 former/current Governors, Principal Secretaries, Senators, MPs, Managing Directors of State Corporations among others,” he said.
The governors are from the counties of Tharaka Nithi, Nairobi, Kiambu, Garissa, Samburu, Busia, Migori and Nyandarua.
Out of those cases, 275 were concluded in court with 169 resulting in convictions.
Wabukala said the Commission has also completed investigations on allegation of illegal and unexplained wealth against Governors Ferdinand Waititu, Mike Sonko, Evans Kidero and Moses Kassaine and the cases are pending in court, as well as procurement irregularities at KEMSA, pending review by DP.
Further, the Commission has recovered assets (cash, moveable and immovable) worth approximately Kshs 25 Billion and surrendered back for public benefit.
“The Commission has also averted the loss of approximately Ksh 30.4 Billion through proactive investigation and disruption of corruption networks,” said Wabukala.
He said they have as well recovered various parcels of land one belonging to KALRO in Naivasha worth Ksh 8.7B, another belonging to Meteorological Department Land in Industrial Area Nairobi worth Ksh 5B and another belonging to University of Nairobi land situated in Kilimani area worth Ksh 1b.
However, the commission cited budgetary constraints at the Commission, politicization of the fight against corruption and unethical conduct as well as a weak legal framework to implement Chapter 6 of the Constitution.
