The search of the missing Somali-American businessman Mahmud Bashir Mohammed, alias Bashir has intensified as his family and lawyers reach out to United State Embassy in Kenya for assistance.
The 35-year-old structural engineer and director of infinity development limited mysteriously disappeared from Miale Lounge in Lavington, Nairobi, where he was last seen on Thursday last week.
“The mysterious circumstances of the disappearance and the intransigence of the local authorities have led to our clients believing that perhaps there could be foul play regarding Bashir’s disappearance,” read the letter written to the US embassy.
The family also wants the embassy to help them establish the date, location and reason for his arrest if he is in State custody.
According to Bashir’s lawyer, Alibaya Hassan, there were suspicious activities at the Miale lounge .
“You realise in various instances there are a couple of people who are triangulating and they were on mobile telephones and conversations are ongoing and everyone looks quite jittery it looks as though they are watching out waiting for something to happen,” Hassan said.
According to a CCTV footage, Bashir was captured leaving the lounge at around 6:50pm.
Bashir’s family recorded a missing person’s report at Muthangari police station, triggering a search for his whereabouts.
The family and friends tried to trace Mahmoud using a tracking device mounted on the car he had but in vain.
His lawyers said it was likely the car tracker had been disabled as the company that installed it said they could not trace it.
However, the search for Bashir has now turned bizarre after the vehicle he was driving was found burnt to a shell in a thicket in Kibiku area in Ngong, Kajiado county.
Police are also probing how Bashir’s vehicle a Range Rover was found burnt in Kibiku three days after his disappearance and the shell carted away in less than an hour after a police officer from Kibiku police post visited the scene and went back to alert the scene of crime officers only to find the place wiped clean.
The family lawyer and Bashir’s relative which says information on his whereabouts’ has not been forthcoming from the local authorities are set to present a memorandum to the National Assembly Committee on Administration of National Security later in the day.
