Amani National Congress (ANC) party leader Musalia Mudavadi has dismissed claims that One Kenya Alliance is a 2022 state project.
According to Mudavadi, rivals who were beginning to sense defeat had resorted to calling them a project upon realising that their chances of succeeding President Uhuru Kenyatta were slowly fading away.
“If you take a closer look, you will realise those calling us a project are the people currently working closely with the Government. They are closer to the Government than us,” said Mudavadi.
Speaking yesterday morning, Mudavadi said claims that the One Kenya Alliance is a state project are sheer propaganda.
“We should tell Kenyans what we intend to change in their lives if they elect us and then leave it up to them to decide who the next President will be,” he said.
The alliance has brought together Mudavadi, Wiper’s Kalonzo Musyoka, Kanu boss and Baringo Senator Gideon Moi and Ford Kenya leader Moses Wetangúla as of no consequence.
However, disquiet has rocked the alliance over the pairing of its 2022 presidential line-up with reports that Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka’s camp is jittery.
Barely a month after the alliance was formally unveiled, there are reports that a push to settle on a specific preferred line-up has triggered unease that could jolt its 2022 plans.
There are claims that some influential forces are keen on pushing a Musalia-Gideon presidential ticket.
This would relegate Kalonzo and Wetang’ula from the nerve centre of power.
The power balance would leave Kalonzo with the possibility of becoming prime minister if the Building Bridges Initiative referendum, which proposes an expanded Executive, sails through.
This would also force him to seek a parliamentary seat.
However, some of Kalonzo’s allies argue that with the uncertainty surrounding the BBI referendum and the lack of guaranteed approval, the process to settle on the ticket should be halted until after the public vote.
The alliance is also perceived to be packaging itself as the alternative to former premier Raila Odinga and Deputy President William Ruto.
