Formula One legend Sebastian Vettel officially retires
Sebastian Vettel has officially announced his retirement from formula one.
The German driver made this shocking announcement yesterday stating that the main reason for making this decision was in order to spend more time with his wife and three children.
“The decision to retire has been a difficult one for me to take, and I have spent a lot of time thinking about it. At the end of the year, I want to take some more time to reflect on what I will focus on next; it is very clear to me that, being a father, I want to spend more time with my family,” said Vettel via an Instagram post.
His message sent shock waves across the Formula One world as he had earlier revealed to the public that he would remain in the sport beyond 2022.
Everyone anticipated that the Aston Martin star would make a change at the end of this term.
His fans were therefore surprised when he stated that his racing days were officially over.
The owner of the team, Canadian billionaire Lawrence Stroll had big ambitions and is determined to turn the team around into championship contenders.
Vettel’s decision to conclude his career means that Lewis Hamilton is still above him in terms of records as Sebastian finished his profession one appearance short of joining Mercedes star Lewis Hamilton in the Formula One List of drivers with 300 appearances.
Hamilton, 37, holds the joint record for world championships (seven) and has won more races than any other (103) but became just the sixth driver to celebrate his 300th race start at Sunday’s French Grand Prix.
The German racer leaves the sport with 53 race wins and 122 podium appearances, and multiple records including most wins and pole positions in a season.
