Ruto heads to France for G7 Summit at Macron’s invitation days after latter’s Nairobi visit

President William Ruto is today night departing for Évian, France, where he will participate in the G7 Leaders’ Summit at the invitation of French President Emmanuel Macron, positioning Kenya at the centre of global discussions on trade, climate action, digital transformation and access to financing.

Ruto’s invitation comes barely a month after Macron’s visit to Nairobi for Africa Forward Summit.

The June 15-17, 2026 summit brings together leaders of the world’s leading economies and selected partner nations to address pressing global economic and political challenges, including debt sustainability, artificial intelligence governance, geopolitical tensions and reforms to the international financial system.

President Ruto will attend the summit as Africa’s representative, carrying the continent’s collective economic and development agenda formulated during last month’s Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi.

The summit established a unified African position on economic transformation, financial reform, climate action and digital development.

According to State House, the President will use the platform to advocate for reforms to the international financial architecture, affordable access to capital and increased investment flows into Africa.

He is also expected to push for the implementation of recommendations emerging from the Africa Forward Summit aimed at unlocking growth, enterprise development and job creation across the continent.

“President Ruto’s invitation to the summit reflects the growing recognition of Kenya’s strategic leadership role in global affairs and the confidence placed in his voice on matters concerning Africa and the Global South,” State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed said in a statement.

The summit is expected to bring together leaders including United States President Donald Trump, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

During the summit, Kenya intends to strengthen its position as a regional technology and innovation hub.

President Ruto is expected to articulate Africa’s position on artificial intelligence, advocating equitable access to emerging technologies and greater investment in digital infrastructure, data centres, innovation ecosystems and skills development.

The discussions will also provide an opportunity for the President to engage leading global technology firms and artificial intelligence innovators, including executives from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, Meta and NVIDIA, as governments and industry leaders seek to balance innovation with regulation.

On the sidelines of the summit, President Ruto is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with several heads of state and government officials to attract investment into manufacturing, renewable energy, infrastructure, agribusiness, housing, healthcare, digital services and value-added exports.

The engagements will also seek to unlock opportunities under Kenya’s National Infrastructure Fund and deepen economic cooperation with strategic partners.

Analysts view Kenya’s participation in the summit as further evidence of the country’s growing diplomatic influence and its expanding role in articulating African interests in global forums.

For Africa, Ruto’s presence offers an opportunity to advocate for greater representation in global decision-making, increased development financing, fairer lending conditions and stronger partnerships to support industrialisation, digital transformation and climate adaptation.

State House said the president’s engagements are expected to advance Kenya’s economic diplomacy agenda, unlock new investment opportunities and reinforce the country’s position as a gateway to Africa while promoting the continent’s collective interests on the global stage.
