From a 250km walk to a university welcome: Duncan Kibet’s dream finally finds a home at MKU

After eleven long years away from the classroom, Duncan Kibet refused to let his dream of becoming a teacher fade into memory. Instead, he laced up his shoes and began walking.
On January 28, 2026, the soft-spoken young man from Bomet County set out on foot for Nairobi, a daunting 250-kilometre journey that would take him four days to complete.
His mission was simple yet profound, to raise funds and awareness for his long-deferred ambition of pursuing a Bachelor of Education degree.
What began as a solitary trek along Kenya’s highways soon transformed into a moving national story of resilience, sacrifice and hope.
Kibet completed his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) more than a decade ago.
Like many bright students from humble backgrounds, he carried university dreams in his heart but lacked the financial means to turn them into reality. Raised by a single mother, he made a painful but selfless decision to put his education on hold and support his younger siblings through school.
Years passed. Responsibilities grew. The dream remained.
But rather than surrender to circumstance, Kibet chose action. With little more than determination and faith, he embarked on the 250-kilometre walk from Bomet to the capital.

Mount Kenya University (MKU) stepped forward with life-changing news. Duncan Kibet had been granted unconditional admission to pursue his Bachelor of Education degree. The university went further, offering him accommodation in its hostels as he completes his admission requirements.
In a statement, MKU described his story as “a remarkable testament to courage, resilience, and the transformative power of education.” The institution called on Kenyans to continue supporting him as he begins this new academic chapter.
For Kibet, the admission represents far more than enrollment papers or a hostel room. It is validation proof that his sacrifices were not in vain. It is the reopening of a door he feared had closed forever. It is, in many ways, the light at the end of a tunnel that stretched over eleven challenging years.
