The United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA), hosted by the UN Environment Programme, brings together representatives from the UN’s 193 member states, corporations, civil society and other stakeholders to agree on policies to address the world’s most serious environmental concerns.
The resumed fifth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-5.2) takes place online and in Nairobi on 28 February – 2 March 2022.
The overall theme for UNEA-5 is “Strengthening Actions for Nature to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals” is the theme of the event.
Last week, Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Macharia Kamau stated that the UN Environment Programme’s 50th anniversary (Unep@50) will be commemorated at the Unep headquarters in Gigiri, Nairobi.
“The assembly, this time round, shall address itself to three planetary crises; climate change, nature and biodiversity loss, and pollution and waste,” the PS said in a statement read on his behalf by the Director of International Conferences and Events (Dice), Ambassador Isaiya Kabira.
This emphasizes the importance of nature in our lives as well as in social, economic, and environmental sustainability.
UNEA-5 provides an opportunity for Member States to share sustainable best practices. It will give nations the impetus they need to build on and catalyse global environmental initiatives to conserve and restore the natural world on which our businesses and societies rely.
High-level delegates will attend the two conferences, including four presidents from Botswana, the Maldives, Nigeria, and South Sudan, as well as the vice presidents of Tanzania and Iran, the prime ministers of Sri Lanka and Namibia, the UN Deputy Secretary General, the president of the General Assembly, and several foreign and environmental ministers.
