A Nairobi based woman was today charged in connection to Sh9.2million fraud after pretending she was in a position to facilitate secure two university slots in the United States of America (USA).
Edith Akinyi Halwenge was charged while appearing before Milimani Senior Principal Magistrate Dolphina Alego, Edith Akinyi Halwenge was accused of defrauding Pauline Njeri Njuguna Sh9,227,700 within a span of two years.
She is accused of obtaining the said monies in pretex that she was able to facilitate Melvin Ndung’u Mathenge and Patricia Nduku Kimanthi, Njeri’s children secure university’s positions in Illinois and Las Vegas.
However, she denied the charges.
Akinyi pleased with the court to release her on bond claiming that when he was required to plead she and her child fell ill and could not attend court.
She told the court that her child has since died and was away mourning,
“I have visited police station ten times to establish when I should appear in court in vain,” Akinyi told the court.
She pleaded to be released on reasonable cash bail adding that she had been out on police cash bail of Sh100,000 and is yet to be refunded to her.
The court directed the investigating officer who was not in court to refund the accused the police cash bail.
Consequently, the court released her on a Sh200,000 cash bail with three contact persons as guarantors.
The prosecutor did not oppose the accused to be released on bond.
The matter will be mentioned on March 6, 2025, for pre-trial and directions.
