We have no commercial ties with Kenya Government, APO Group says

APO Group has denied having commercial ties with the Kenyan government.

Reacting to online reports about its engagement with Kenya, APO Group clarified that it has been working for the presidency since March 2020 on a pro bono basis.

“APO Group has no commercial ties with the Kenyan authorities. Since March 2020—long before President Ruto’s tenure—we have shared their news pro bono as we do with many African democratic nations and as part of our mission to amplify African voices,” it said in a statement sent to Kenyan newsrooms on Monday evening.

Government spokesman Isaac Mwaura had earlier made a similar statement.

“A recent article suggests that the government has hired APO Group and Zawya for PR. To clarify, there are no commercial ties with these organisations. APO has been sharing Presidency news pro bono since March 2020, prior to President Ruto’s tenure, as part of their broader mission to amplify African voices,” he said on his X account.

APO Group and Zawya have been among the leading sources of news on government activities, especially the presidency, in what was said to be part of an effort to repair Kenya’s image abroad in the wake of negative publicity over human rights abuses and corruption.

Some blogs claimed the campaign is costing the government a huge amount of money.

However, APO Group’s founder and chairman Nicolas Pompigne-Mognard is reputed for using the organisation, which he launched in 2011, to shape Africa’s story both locally and globally.

Recently, he was recognised as one of the 100 Most Influential Africans for the second year in a row by New African magazine.
