The Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Nordin Haji has stated that the Sh10 million graft case against Kirinyaga county governor Ann Waiguru is still under investigation.
Through a statement, acting deputy director of public prosecutions Grace Murungi noted that the case involving Waiguru was returned to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) for further investigations.
“Consequently, vide a letter dated 25th March 2022, the ODPP communicated to the EACC the critical areas that require further investigations before a final decision can be made in the matter. The EACC vide a letter dated 1st April 2022 acknowledged receipt and are currently acting on the areas identified for investigations,” stated Murungi.
The DPP disclaimed responsibility for the accusations that they were obstructing the probe, reiterating that they can only reach a conclusion after the investigations are finished.
Waiguru is said to have visited seven nations, including the US and the UK, but the EACC asserts that its investigations have revealed that some of the trips were fictitious.
According to EACC, there were no letters of invitation, no authorized work plans, no itinerary, no approved work schedules, and some trips did not have letters of appointment, nomination, or authorization to leave the country.
Additionally, EACC stated that there were no back-to-office reports and the imprests were neither surrendered nor backed by payment vouchers or boarding justifications.
Kirinyaga governor is accused of having irregularly received imprest amounting to Sh10,634,614.
However, she denied any wrongdoing but claimed that the graft allegations were a political witch-hunt.
