Uhuru, central parks temporarily shut down for renovation

Uhuru Park and Central Park have been temporarily closed for a period of three months for renovation works.

The move comes following Nairobi County assembly approval on a motion that will upgrade parks at the city to a modern state.

In a motion tabled in the county assembly, Majority leader Abdi Guyo called for immediate closure of the parks to allow restoration to their former glory.

“The status of the capital city’s parks and green spaces has deteriorated over the decades as maintenance and renovation have not kept pace with the increasing population and residents’ demands to use the park,” he said.

Guyo regretted that the parks were neglected for years saying they were at risk of losing their appeal and historical significance if actions will not be taken as soon as possible.

“While NMS has invested heavily in the renovation of Michuki Memorial Park, the same has not materialised for Uhuru Park and Central Park which remain in a state of disrepair,” said Guyo.

He urged Nairobi Metropolitant Service boss Major General Mohammed Badi to work around to complete the renovations within the stipulated time.

Minority Leader Michael Ogada said the works will last for three months as NMS intends to do meaningful rehabilitation at the two parks.

“Let us give them the three months they are requesting for but let them not fence off the place and then disappear,” he said.

The proposal came from NMS and City Hall, necessitating the motion.
