Three Die in separate drowning and electrocution incidents in Kwale, Homa Bay and Kilifi

Three people have died in separate incidents involving drowning and electrocution in Kwale, Homa Bay and Kilifi counties.

In Kwale County, 21-year-old Lawrence Bahati drowned while swimming in the Indian Ocean at Watatu Watano Beach in Diani.

Bahati was reportedly swimming when he encountered difficulties and drowned. Eyewitnesses said attempts to rescue him were unsuccessful, with strong winds hampering the efforts.

Police officers who visited the scene recovered and documented the body on Wednesday evening before it was taken to the mortuary at Msambweni Sub-County Hospital.

The body is being preserved at the facility pending a postmortem examination as police investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

In Homa Bay County, 78-year-old Serfina Okoth Nyaloo drowned in a water pond in Kamboga Village, Wachara Sub-location, North Kanyikela Location, Ndhiwa Sub-County.

Police said Nyaloo’s body was discovered floating in the pond at about 6.15pm by women who had gone there to fetch water. The women alerted members of her family, who had been searching for her after she went missing from home.

Preliminary information indicated that Nyaloo was mentally challenged. Police and officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) are expected to establish the circumstances that led to her death.

Meanwhile, in Kilifi Town, a 23-year-old man died after allegedly being electrocuted while working on the roof of a church in the Mabirikani area.

The deceased, identified as Peter John Mwaboga, was reportedly among workers involved in construction and repair work at the worship centre when he came into contact with an electrical current.

Mwaboga is said to have died instantly.

Police officers who visited the scene documented the incident and launched investigations to establish how the electrocution occurred and whether safety measures were observed at the construction site.
