Mudavadi to represent Ruto at AU Extraordinary Summit in Angola

Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Musalia Mudavadi is set to travel to Luanda, Angola, where he will represent President William Ruto at the 21st Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union (AU) on August 30, 2026.
The high-level meeting will focus on strengthening Africa’s mechanisms for conflict prevention and resolution, with leaders expected to consider practical measures to improve the continent’s capacity to prevent, manage and resolve conflicts.
Mudavadi’s participation comes as Kenya seeks to strengthen its role in the African Union’s peace and security architecture and advance its diplomatic priorities on the continental stage.
Kenya is expected to use the meeting to advocate for African-led approaches to resolving conflicts, regional stability and stronger cooperation among member states.
The session will also provide an opportunity for Kenya to advance discussions on regional integration and Africa’s broader development agenda, amid growing efforts by African countries to strengthen continental institutions and address common challenges collectively.
Kenya’s participation follows its recent elevation to tier one status within the African Union, a milestone that gives the country a stronger platform to participate in shaping continental policies and priorities.
The elevation is expected to enhance Kenya’s influence in AU decision-making and provide greater opportunities for the country to contribute to debates on peace and security, economic development, climate change, regional integration and multilateral diplomacy.
Under President Ruto’s administration, Kenya has sought a more prominent role in continental and international affairs, including through its engagement in regional peace initiatives and multilateral institutions.
The country has positioned itself as an advocate for peaceful conflict resolution and African-led solutions to security challenges affecting the continent.
Mudavadi’s visit to Luanda therefore comes at a significant moment for Kenya’s diplomatic engagement with the AU. His participation is expected to reinforce Nairobi’s commitment to strengthening continental cooperation while ensuring that Kenya’s foreign policy priorities are reflected in key AU decisions.
The government has maintained that Kenya’s growing diplomatic influence should ultimately translate into tangible benefits for its citizens through enhanced regional trade, investment, security cooperation and partnerships.
The Luanda session is expected to bring together African leaders and senior representatives to deliberate on measures aimed at building more effective continental mechanisms for preventing and resolving conflicts.
Mudavadi’s representation of President Ruto will place Kenya among the countries participating in efforts to strengthen Africa’s collective capacity to respond to conflicts and promote lasting peace and stability.
The meeting also comes as African states face persistent security and political challenges requiring stronger coordination and locally driven solutions.
Kenya’s delegation is expected to use the platform to reaffirm Nairobi’s commitment to a peaceful, integrated and economically prosperous Africa, while seeking to strengthen the country’s voice in continental affairs.
