Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga has hinted at working with his National Super Alliance (NASA) co-principals again as the country heads to next year’s general election.
Musalia Mudavadi (ANC) Kalonzo Musyoka (Wiper) and Moses Wetang’ula (Ford Kenya) are part of the newly formed One Kenya Alliance (OKA) that also includes Kanu chairman and Baringo Senator Gideon Moi.
According to Raila, NASA divorce did not mean that they cannot mend fences and work together.
“NASA divorce doesn’t mean we cannot work together, Nasa’s work ended but we will come together in the near future,” he said.
He said the ODM party is seekeing new alliances with like minded parties.
He said that he had called for an ODM delegates meeting that would make a decision on which coalition to join.
He added that ODM was scheduled to have regional delegates meetings across the country after which he will make his political statement on whether to join OKA or not.
“Starting next week, we will embark on countrywide delegates starting with Nyanza, then Western, Coast and other regions and after that we will be ready to engage any coalition including OKA,” Raila said.
This comes after his former allies welcomed him to join the alliance however, they have been categorical that he should not come with demands that he should be the flag-bearer.
ANC was the first party to exits Nasa coalition followed by Wiper, ODM then Ford-Kenya.
However, there had been squabbling over share of political parties fund which they accused ODM of withholding.
In a letter, ODM leader conceded to Wiper’s request to share out political parties’ funds.
“The Orange Democratic Movement is appreciative of the constructive consultations that have taken place among leaders of our respective parties, consequently thereto, our party has deliberated internally and resolved that we share with our coalition partners…monies from political parties fund attributable to (parliamentary, gubernatorial and county assemblies) votes for the financial years 2017/ 18, 2018/19 and 2019/2020. It was our sincere hope that this would bring closure to the unhealthy exchange of words that has attended this matter,” stated the letter.
It has since emerged that ODM will be giving its affiliates Sh152 million of the Sh308 million.
ODM will still get the lion’s share with Sh187.9 million, followed by Wiper (Sh70.4 million), ANC (Sh43.8 million), Ford Kenya (Sh36 million) and Chama Cha Mashinani (Sh3 million). The amount was calculated based on the parliamentary strength of each party.
The Registrar of Political Parties still owes the coalition Sh7.5 billion for the 2017-18, 2018-19 and 2019-20 financial years.
