Gospel singer Rachel Wandetto dies after brutal petrol attack in Nairobi
Gospel singer Rachel Wandeto has died while receiving treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) after suffering severe burns in a brutal attack in Nairobi’s Mwiki area, police and family sources have confirmed.
Wandeto, who had sustained burns covering about 70 per cent of her body, succumbed to her injuries today, May 18, 2026, days after she was attacked by unknown assailants who allegedly doused her with petrol and set her on fire.
The attack occurred on Friday night along Obama Road, 11th Street in Mwiki, where three masked men are reported to have ambushed her shortly after midnight.
She was first taken to Uzima Uhai Hospital before being referred to KNH for specialised care due to the severity of her injuries.
News of her death was confirmed by fellow gospel artist Karangu Muraya, who said she had been battling for her life in hospital and required urgent blood donations during treatment.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with leaders and human rights organisations calling for swift investigations and justice.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen condemned the attack, describing it as “heinous” and warning against politically motivated violence and intolerance.
He said investigations had been launched to establish the motive and bring the perpetrators to justice.
“I am profoundly saddened to learn of the demise of Ms Rachel Wandetto… No one deserves to be injured or killed for their political views or affiliation,” Murkomen said, adding that the government would ensure those responsible are arrested and prosecuted.
Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja confirmed that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) had taken over the case, directing officers to expedite investigations into the circumstances surrounding the attack.
Authorities said preliminary findings suggest Wandetto was attacked by a group of three men who poured a flammable substance on her before setting her ablaze, though the motive has not been conclusively established.
The case has drawn national attention amid speculation that the attack may have been politically motivated, following reports that the singer had previously expressed public support for President William Ruto, including a viral tattoo bearing his image.
However, officials have cautioned against drawing conclusions before investigations are complete.
The Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) condemned the killing, describing it as a violation of constitutional rights and urging police to ensure all those involved are brought to justice.
Former Law Society of Kenya president Faith Odhiambo also denounced the attack, calling it a reflection of growing threats against women and warning against the normalisation of violence.
Police say Wandetto suffered extensive burns to her arms, legs, torso and face, and was initially rushed to hospital by her husband after the attack. She was later transferred to KNH, where she remained in critical condition until her death.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing, with police yet to make any arrests.
