Simon Muteti freed after three months in abduction

The Law Society of Kenya has offered to ensure Simon Muteti, an abductee who was released yesterday receives both legal and psychological support.
Confirming his release, LSK president Faith Odhiambo said the victim is deeply affected by the traumatic experience of the last three months.
The president also confirmed that Muteti has been reunited with his family.
“Simon Muteti has been released after being held incommunicado for more than three months. He is safe with his family but remains petrified by his ordeal,” the LSK president stated.
Muteti has been missing for the last three months after he was abducted in October last year while in Timau by people believed to be members of the Special Operations Unit as his whereabouts remained uncertain.
The disappearance of Muteti gained the attention of the public in January this year when his family approached LSK for legal assistance.
According to LSK, the incidents highlight a disturbing pattern of enforced disappearances, not just in Nairobi but across the country.
The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) documented Muteti’s abduction as one of several cases reported between June and December 2024.
In a statement last year December, KNCHR raised concerns over a wave of disappearances targeting government critics, widely believed to involve security agencies as authorities have repeatedly denied these claims.
Data from KNCHR revealed that 82 cases of abductions or enforced disappearances were recorded over six months, with 13 occurring in the last three months alone.
“There have been thirteen more cases of abductions or enforced disappearances in the last three months, bringing to 82 the total cases since June 2024. Seven of the recent abduction cases were reported in December 2024, with six of them still missing, bringing to 29 the total number of persons still missing since June 2024,” they said in their last report of December last year.
