Sh1million bonus for Harambee Stars players after stunning CHAN opener win

Harambee Stars players are set to receive Sh1million each following their 1-0 win against the Democratic Republic of Congo yesterday in their Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 opener.

The winning goal by Gor Mahia midfielder Austin Odhiambo was scored early in the first half.

The players will receive the motivation from President William Ruto, who promised the same when he hosted them for breakfast a day before the match, during which he shared that he would reward them a total of Sh600 million if they win the tournament.

Further, the head of state promised Sh500,000 to every player for a match they will draw.

Yesterday’s match set the tone for what could be a strong campaign for the ongoing tournament.

In a calm post-match analysis, the national team coach, Benni McCarthy, credited the fans who showed up to lift the team’s spirit at the Moi Sports Centre, Kasarani.

“The fans have shown us love, and they stood by the team based on how the players played. I am just slightly disappointed we didn’t give them a second or third goal,” Benni stated.

McCarthy reserved special praise for Manzur Suleiman, whose surprise deployment in a defensive midfield role helped Kenya dictate play.

Looking ahead, the coach warned that the next fixture against Angola on Thursday, August 7, will be even tougher.

“Angola isn’t going to get any easier. The hardest hurdle for us is over, which is getting our first win in the first game of the tournament, and now the boys can relax a bit and prepare for Angola.”

The mood in the camp remains upbeat, with President William Ruto maintaining his visible support and fulfillment of promised reward packages. McCarthy says the players draw extra inspiration from that backing.
