Senate to convene special sitting on Mwangaza’s impeachment on Tuesday
Senate speaker Amason Kingi has gazetted a special siting for the House to consider the impeachment motion of Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza.
Through a gazette notice, Kingi announced that the sitting follows a request by the Senate Majority leader Aaron Cheruiyot and Meru county Assembly speaker Ayub Bundi to convene on the subject.
He said the lawmakers will convene Tuesday at 2.30 pm in the senate chambers.
“I have appointed Tuesday, 20th December 2022 as a day for a special sitting of the Senate. ,” read part of the statement.
“The business to be transacted in the sitting shall be the hearing of the charges against Hon. Kawira Mwangaza of Meru County,” the statement added.
The motion was tabled on grounds that the Governor had infringed on her constitutional powers.
At least 24 senators of the 47 will be required to approve the resolution of either approving or rejecting the impeachment.
The Senate may choose to form a special committee of 11 Senators to probe the matter or consider the impeachment motion as a House.
Such a committee would have up to ten days to report back to the House, with the governor given a chance to defend herself.
