Security beefed up at Kasarani Stadium ahead of Ruto’s inauguration ceremony

Security at the Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani has been beefed up ahead of president-elect William Ruto’s inauguration ceremony today.

Over 10,000 officers were deployed to provide security at the 60,000 seater stadium as Kenyans who awaited Ruto and his deputy Rigathi Gachagua to take their oaths of office streamed in in large numbers by dawn.

Police spokesman Bruno Shioso advised Kenyans to watch the swearing in ceremony at the comfort of their homes because the stadium was fully packed.

“In anticipation of being part of history, Kenyans have thronged the venue in large numbers. By 5.00 am this morning, the venue had already filled to capacity, as more people continue to troop to the venue. To avoid logistical challenges, this is to request the public to make alternative arrangements to view the proceedings, especially from the comfort of their homes,” he said.

At the event of Kenyans streaming in at the stadium, a rowdy group pulled down a section of the five metres Kasarani perimeter wall and made their way into the venue past the security checkpoint.

At least eight people were injured in the stampede prompting more police to be brought in to control the situation after the scene turned chaotic.

Police officers intervened and controlled the situation and rescued the injured from being walked over by the crowd.

Red Cross personnel seen evacuating the casualties from the scene.

Ruto will be succeeding outgoing President Uhuru Kenyatta as the fifth president of the republic.

Uhuru will then hand over the instruments of Power to Ruto in the presence of Chief Justice Martha Koome.
