Busia county sex workers forced to re-use condoms

Majority of Busia county sex workers claim that they are currently compelled to wash and reuse contraceptives in order to satisfy the sexual desires of their clients.

It has been established that male and female condoms are reportedly in short supply in the county, with the few that are available coming from the neighbouring country of Uganda.

Women who are unable to purchase condoms resort to recycling them after washing in order to safeguard themselves against Sexual Transmitted Diseases (STD’S) like HIV.

“We are begging with the authorities to send condoms to Busia because our lives are in danger,” a commercial sex worker said.

Busia County Director of Medical Services, Janerose Ambuchi, claimed that her agency was not aware of the recycling of the contraceptives.

“I haven’t seen it on my desk, but if it’s happening, it shouldn’t be permitted to continue since the condom’s integrity will be compromised. This generation will be put in risk if they use condoms a second and third time, “said Ambuchi.

According to the officer, a drop in financing from international donors is the cause of the condom shortage.

“The county (Busia) is dealing with a severe condom shortage, which is a county-wide issue. It’s a rampant problem. This product is supported by donations and is based on a global fund. Donor money is currently in decline,” she noted.
