Raila Odinga castigate Ruto’s slow response to drought stricken areas
Azimio One Kenya alliance leader Raila Odinga has criticised President William Ruto’s administration for its poor response to the severe drought and famine that are ravaging several regions in the country.
Through a press release, Odinga said that the situation calls for a significant emergency response program, which is missing, to facilitate the prompt supply of food, water, and medical emergency aid to those in need.
“Instead, the 2027 elections and the politics of survival dominate the government. Rather than acting for residents and protecting our species, those in positions of power, he claimed, “are blaming those outside of government for not cooperating with them,” read the statement.
“That appears to be what happens when a nation is led by individuals without a vision or a mandate to rule,” he added.
Additionally, Odinga said that there are government “shylocks” who appear to be attempting to benefit from the drought.
“As if the government’s apathy wasn’t awful enough, senior officials appear to be plotting to profit directly from the drought,” he said.
“That is the justification for the hasty acceptance of genetically modified foods in the nation. The leaders may take advantage of the drought and famine to make a killing, reimburse their major foreign donors, and ally with those firms going forward, “he claimed.
To lessen the drought, the former Prime Minister suggested that the government must right away announce a comprehensive quick response program and launch it on the ground, not just in arid and semi-arid regions but also in all impacted areas of Kenya.
“Every region of the nation is affected by the drought resulting to food shortage,” he said.
Additionally, he suggested that the government should ensure that food aid reaches the poor people, especially school children, as soon as possible and all government resources to be deployed and made visible as being in use.
Further, he suggested that the Kenya Meat Commission (KMC), drilling of boreholes, and the delivery of hay to the affected areas must start right away in order to purchase the cattle at fair and openly announced prices per live animal, KMC staff must be stationed there right away.
The Azimio leader continued to aggressively oppose the government’s decision to reintroduce genetically modified food, arguing that it is not the solution to Kenya’s ongoing food shortages.
