Public Works PS Mariam El-Maawy has died while undergoing treatment in South Africa.
She was flown to the country for specialised treatment after an attack by al Shabaab fighters.
El-Maawy was among six people abducted by the militants in Lamu last month. The PS and her entourage were hijacked at Milihoi on Lamu-Mpeketoni highway after attending a Lapsset event.
She was rescued by KDF soldiers currently conducting patrols in the area and airlifted to Nairobi for treatment.
President Uhuru Kenyatta sent a condolence message through State House spokesman Manoah Esipisu.
Esipisu said the President is “deeply distressed” and that he eulogised her as a dedicated public servant, accomplished architect and patriot.

Uhuru further said the Principal Secretary established a successful practice, which she led for many years, but never allowed her work to get in the way of public service.
“Whether serving as a council member at Mombasa Polytechnic, or leading efforts to conserve Mombasa’s architectural heritage, she found ways to put her knowledge and skill at the service of her community,” read the statement issued on Wednesday.
“Her achievements, expertise, public spirit, and patriotism meant that it was a pleasure to invite her to join my administration.”
El-Maawy first served as PS in the Lands ministry and Uhuru said she served with distinction in both offices.
“Her loss will certainly be felt,” he said, noting those who worked with her will remember her warmth, and quiet, firm dedication to serving Kenyans the best way she could.
“May Allah rests her soul in peace and comfort her family and all who knew and loved her in this moment of sorrow and grief.”
