Public beaches at the Coast to be closed at 6pm during the Easter holiday
Regional commander stated that security and intelligence officers will be strategically placed across the region to help address challenges that might occur during the holidays.
Public beaches in the coastal region will be closed at 6 pm throughout the East Holiday.
This has been announced by the Coast Regional Commander, Ali Nunow, who said the move is part of efforts by the police to curb the Panga boys gang menace that is currently facing the region.
The police boss, who was in the company of other top security officials, stressed the importance of enforcing the directive as the region expects a lot of travelers during the Easter Celebrations.
The regional commander stated that security and intelligence officers will be strategically placed across the region to help address challenges that might occur during the holidays.
He assured those planning to travel to the region that there are enhanced security measures and they will be well.
”This is part of the strategies being set out to ensure that there is seamless movement of travelers and visitors along the Kenyan coast. This is a tourist destination centre, and I therefore want to assure our people and the international community that the coastal region is safe and secure,” the police boss stressed.
” We have an operational order in place, and we will be having teams that will be moving around. They will be strategically placed for enforcement,” he added.
The police boss added that long-distance transport companies shall be required to have two drivers for every road to help address fatigue of drivers and reduce carnage issues on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.
He added that intoxicated drivers and those who violate the traffic rules shall be charged.
”We will not allow road carnages to be a nuisance during the period, and we will take intoxicated drivers head-on,” Nunow stated.
This comes as the Coast region is fighting the rising cases of young people terrorising people and robbing them of their goods, armed with pangas and machetes.
Earlier on, Nunow had directed the Chiefs in Diani which has witnessed the violent cases of Panga boys, to submit the names of the young people associated with the outlawed gang together with their parents.
This is even as the gang has long been a thorn in the flesh of Kwale and Mombasa County residents.
Last month, the gang conducted violent attacks in Diani, leaving several people injured.
In a video that circulated on social media, the gang, posing as protestors, was seen storming into residential buildings with machetes, chasing and robbing residents.
The same was also witnessed in Mtwapa, Kilifi County, where they robbed a family of their valuables and ran away on Motorbikes.
