President Uhuru Kenyatta has ordered a thorough and expeditious investigation into the shooting incident in Masimba yesterday that left four people dead and six more injured.
Kenyatta directed that a senior security team be dispatched to the scene of the incident along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway immediately.
Today, Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi and Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai led a team of investigators to launch investigations and condole with the victims’ families.
They were directed to ensure those injured get the appropriate medical attention.
Matiang’i described the Kajiado incident as “unfortunate” following a meeting with senior security and national government administration officers at the APTC Embakasi, adding that the government will do everything possible to ensure justice is administered.
“The IG and I are going to visit Kajiado, we want to find out how far the investigations have gone and what is being done, but we are a responsible government.
Where there are human-wildlife conflicts, we are responsible enough to compensate those citizens of our country who have suffered as a result of human-wildlife conflict,” the CS said.
Three people died on the spot while another was pronounced dead on arrival at a local hospital after suffering gunshot wounds after allegedly being shot at by police.
The four deaths were confirmed by officials of Makindu Hospital, who said that six other persons had been injured to varying degrees.
The police squad was dispatched to Masimba, located on the main Nairobi-Mombasa highway.
Residents, who were enraged, barricaded the route for hours, shutting off the transportation corridor and leaving cars and truckers defenseless.
