Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has officially withdrawn his candidacy for president in the August 2022 General Election.
Through a quick dispatch to newsrooms earlier today, Wiper Democratic Movement claimed that he would not be delivering his documents to the IEBC on June 4 as planned.
Wiper Chairperson Agatha Solitei announced in a letter addressed to the electoral commission’s head Wafula Chebukati that Musyoka will not be delivering his candidacy papers.
“We write to inform you that Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka of ID number 8932417 has withdrawn his candidature as the Wiper Democratic Movement Presidential nominee. By the strength of this letter, we notify your office that he will not be presenting his presidential nomination papers at 2pm on June 4, 2022 as earlier scheduled,” Solitei indicated in a statement.
Kalonzo’s official resignation from the presidential campaign comes a day after he proclaimed his support for Raila Odinga, the Azimio One Kenya coalition candidate.
“I have realised that the future of our nation is on our shoulders. I have deferred my dreams to run in the August elections,” he said.
Kalonzo accepted the Chief minister position offered by Azimio presidential candidate Raila Odinga. He stated that he decided after extensive consultations with party officials during a press conference.
“We have an opportunity to choose a united and prosperous Kenya. The alternative is unthinkable,” Musyoka said.
This is after a month of back and forth, where the Wiper leader had announced he would run for the top seat by being on the ballot in the August polls, said that he had considered all factors at hand, and had decided to shelve his ambition and put the people’s interest first.
The Wiper leader also commended Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua on being chosen as a running mate for the Azimio alliance, pledging his complete support to both their candidacy and the coalition.
