Police issue traffic disruption alert ahead of Kenya-Madagascar quarter finals clash
Temporary traffic disruptions are expected along Thika Road ahead of the CHAN quarter finals between Madagascar and Kenya at the Kasarani Stadium.
A statement issued by the National Police Service (NPS) has indicated that motorists using the Superhighway and adjoining routes will be affected by the disruption.
The traffic plan shared by NPS has directed motorists from Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) heading to Thika Road through Ruiru, Juja, and Thika will be diverted to Kiambu Road at Exit 4, with a roadblock placed at Muthaiga.
Vehicles using the highway to access Mwiki will be rerouted through Ruaka-Baba Ndogo-Lucky Summer-Nairobi River-Mwiki.
Traffic from Thika, Juja, and Ruiru heading to the CBD will be diverted through the Northern Bypass or Kiambu Road, with a roadblock set up at Ruiru Interchange.
On the other hand, motorists from Githurai to the city centre will be directed through Githurai 44 to Kiambu Road.
Fans without vehicle access passes driving from Nairobi CBD to Moi International Sports Centre will be required to use the service lanes at Exit 7 and Exit 8 to access Kasarani.
“The National Police Service continues to work collaboratively with relevant agencies and urges all motorists to cooperate with officers on-site to ensure smooth traffic flow. Additional police officers have been deployed and will take stern action against anyone violating traffic rules,” NPS has announced in the statement.
This comes after Kenya’s appeal to have the Confederation of African Football (CAF) increase stadium attendance Kenya vs Madagascar quarter-final match was approved yesterday.
Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya announced that the federation increased the attendance by 20 per cent to 36,000 tickets.
The government has already moved to facilitate the new arrangements, with ticketing systems being updated to accommodate the extra demand.
“The ticketing portal is now open to accommodate the additional numbers, ensuring more fans can rally behind the Harambee Stars in the ongoing CHAN 2024 tournament,” the CS stated yesterday evening.
This is even as the government, through FKF and the Local Organizing Committee (LOC), expanded the number of official fan zones from 10 to 13.
The new venues include Ruiru, Camp Toyoyo in Dagoretti, and Baba Dogo.
These will complement existing fan zones at Uhuru Park, Archives, Dandora, Jacaranda, Clay City, Githurai, Kibra DC Grounds, and Lucky Summer.
