Police bust Githurai drug den, seize 250kgs of cannabis
Eight suspects have been arrested after police recovered 250 kilogrammes of cannabis during an intelligence-led anti-narcotics operation in Githurai 44, Kasarani Sub-County, dealing what authorities described as a major blow to the illegal drug trade in Nairobi.
The National Police Service (NPS) said the overnight operation was launched following actionable intelligence and information received from members of the public regarding suspected narcotics activities at a residential property in the area.
According to the NPS, officers raided the premises and conducted a thorough search, leading to the recovery of a large consignment of Cannabis Sativa and equipment believed to have been used in processing and packaging the drugs.
“Police officers in Nairobi have dealt a significant blow to the local narcotics supply chain following an overnight operation in Kasarani Sub-County,” the NPS said in a statement.
Among the items recovered were 250 kilogrammes of Cannabis Sativa, 1,800 rolling papers, a 25-kilogramme bag of white polythene packaging material, and a large metallic sieving mesh suspected to have been used in processing the narcotics before distribution.
The eight suspects were arrested at the scene and taken into police custody, where they are being processed ahead of their arraignment in court.
Police said all the recovered exhibits have been securely preserved as investigations continue to establish the source of the cannabis, the intended distribution network and whether the suspects are linked to a wider drug trafficking syndicate operating within Nairobi and its environs.
The National Police Service commended members of the public whose tip-off led to the successful operation, saying community cooperation remains critical in the fight against narcotics and other forms of organised crime.
