Owners of impounded matatus threaten to sue NTSA boss for contempt

The operators will be urging the court to commit him to jail for a period of six months and if at all the court will give an option of a fine, he will pay from his pocket in person

The Director General of the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) George Njau is yet  to release impounded matatus as directed by the High Court on Monday.

The matatu owners camped at the NTSA offices at Upper Hill in vain.
Following the disobedience of the court order the operators, through their lawyers Danstan Omari and Shadrack Wambui, said they will commence contempt of court proceedings against  Njau,
“We camped at the office of the Director General of NTSA for hours hoping to get the number plates of our clients vehicles in vain,” Omari said.
Expressing displeasure in the blatant disobedience of the court order by Njau, the matatu owners resolved to commence legal action against the NTSA boss in person.
The operators will be urging the court to commit him to jail for a period of six months and if at all the court will give an option of a fine, he will pay from his pocket in person.
“If the court will give him an option of a fine, he will pay from his own money not from the money of tax payers,” Wambui stated.
High Court judge Bahati Mwamuye gave orders on Monday directing the Director General of the NTSA to release the number plates confiscated to the operators.
The lawyers told journalists at Milimani law courts that they served Njau with the court order and they were expecting it to be executed by 10:00 AM today but he chose to ignore.
The vehicles have been impounded and their registration numbers removed for two months prompting the owners and the industry to incur huge losses.
