Opposition to forward additional EALA nominees to Parliament

The opposition coalition will now be forced to give additional nominees to the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) even as it emerged that the new membership to the assembly will be elected by the new incoming parliament.

The move comes after the joint parliamentary select committee on the nomination of EALA recommended that rule 6 of the assembly be deleted to make sure that each party nominates for election three times the original figure.

In the report, the committee co chaired by Katoo Ole Metito and Kipchumba Murkomen argued that amendment is in order to remove conflicts of interpretation the number of nominees that each nominating party is required to nominate.

Reads the amendment: “the number of candidates that each party shall be entitled for under these rules shall be three times the figure arrived at by multiplying the number of elected members of that party by such number as the joint committee shall determine ad dividing the result by the total number of elected members of parliament.”
