Nyong’o refutes media reports of split in ODM over broad-based Cabinet

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has refuted claims in sections of the media, insinuating that a meeting called by the top party on Friday last week turned stormy over growing ideological differences and support for President William Ruto.

Responding to the report, Prof Anyang’ Nyong’o, ODM acting chair, said the allegations were false adding that the meeting was held in a spirit of ‘camaraderie, mutual respect, and unity of purpose’.

Prof Nyong’o said the meeting was called to review the recently conducted polling units of the party elections and was meant to address pressing political and economic issues facing Kenyans.

“At the conclusion of the meeting, our resolutions were communicated to Kenyans in a well-attended press conference by our Secretary General. The resolutions captured our deliberations and reiterated our commitment to strengthening our party’s internal democracy and addressing the challenges facing our country,” he said.

He said there was a deliberate attempt by the enemies of democracy in Kenya, whose sole mission was to destabilise the ODM party. Prof Nyong’o said ODM is stronger and more united now than ever before.

He said the party has remained steadfast in its pursuit of justice, democracy, and prosperity for all Kenyans. Prof Nyong’o said those fueling such baseless rumours should be ‘ready and prepared to call their bluff’.

He said he respects media freedom, which is the cornerstone of Kenya’s democracy, but equally called for balanced treatment by the Fourth Estate. “It is disappointing to note the consistent negative twists by sections of the media in reporting matters concerning our party,” he said.

Prof Nyong’o urged the media to uphold the principles of accuracy, objectivity, and fairness in their reporting. “ODM remains committed to working with all stakeholders, including the media, to build a better Kenya for all,” he said.

Prof Nyong’o wondered why the ODM’s party regular meetings are usually labeled “crisis” despite their being part of the Party’s calendar and aimed at advancing democratic processes and addressing national issues.

He assured the public that ODM operates under a functional party constitution and well-established structures, and remained committed to upholding these principles. “We will not be swayed or distracted by baseless and lazy allegations, rumours, or propaganda aimed at undermining our mission and values.”
