Newly appointed IAU director Gachomo deployed

The newly appointed head of the Internal Affairs Unit (IAU) at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), John Gachomo has been recalled to the police headquarters at Jogoo House Nairobi for redeployment.

Acting Inspector General of Police Noor Gabow said that the unit’s deputy, Esther Ngan’ga will take over as acting director as search for a substantive director is underway.

His appointment was cancelled by Gabow following complaints by civil society groups over missing persons during Gachomo’s period as the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) boss.

Gachomo had headed the ATPU from February 2019 and July 2021 and thereafter, moved to the DCI Headquarters as the Head of Investigations.

Gachomo had been appointed as head of IAU replacing the new DCI boss Mohammed Amin.

The sudden reshuffle follows President William Ruto’s directives to disband DCI’s Special Service Unit (SSU).

This followed revelations that the elite unit had been turned into a militia for conducting extrajudicial killings.
