Former CJ Mutunga lash out at Interior CS Murkomen over digital “criminals” claim

Former Chief Justice (CJ) Willy Mutunga has differed with Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen over the law on social media misuse.

In a statement posted on his X account, Mutunga wondered which law the CS was referring to when he said yesterday that the Kenya Kwanza government would deal with “digital criminals”.

“Which law punishes misuse of social media? And if it exists is aligned to the constitution?” he asked.

Mukomen, while attending a church service in Bomet county, warned Kenyan youth over what he termed as misuse of social media, adding that those engaged in cybercrime would be apprehended and prosecuted.

The CS added that the government would deal firmly with crime in the country, ensuring that all citizens are accounted for in the backdrop of claims of kidnappings.

He also condemned online harassment and the spread of offensive content, warning those circulating defamatory images and falsehoods.

Murkomen said: “We will not allow our young people to share pictures of their leaders in coffins online. Our cybercrime law is very clear. We will follow them there. There is a need to maintain law and order online.”
