Matiang’i is attending to family matters in UK, lawyer Danstan Omari confirms

Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi’s lawyer Danstan Omari has denied claims that his client fled the country despite being summoned by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

Through a statement, the lawyer disclosed that before the former Interior minister departed to the United Kingdom, he had notified security officials.

“Owing to his immediate role in the security sector and his status, I have instructions that my client informally notified senior sector and diplomatic officials about his two weeks trip to the UK. It is therefore unfair to cast aspersions on his movement,” he stated.

He further noted that Matiang’i had to attend to an urgent private family matter and travelled on February 19,2023 via KLM passenger flight KL 566.

“Those familiar with his travel schedule over time will confirm that he travels regularly to that part of the world vial KLM and as was in this case very openly, through open public means. There is nothing sinister about his travel,” he added.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) had earlier launched probe on the wealth accumulated by the former powerful minister for the ten years’ period during his tenure at the helm of top country’s leadership organ, the cabinet under the retired president Uhuru Kenyatta reign.

Eacc Chief Executive Officer Twalib Mbarak demanded the Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service Felix Koskei’s office furnish him with all wealth and assets declaration forms.

According to his Omari, the former CS was not aware of any investigations against him but noted that constitutional offices are at liberty to discharge their mandate.
