Matiang’i declares Tuesday a public holiday to mark Idd-ul-Fitr

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has declared Tuesday a public holiday to mark Idd-ul-Fitr.

Idd-ul-Fitr marks the end of Ramadhan, which is an important religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide to mark the end of the holy month.

“It is notified for the general information of the public that the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and Coordination of National Government, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 2 (1) of the Public Holidays Act, declares that Tuesday, the 3rd May, 2022, shall be a public holiday to mark Idd-ul-Fitr,” he said in the gazette notice.

Ramadhan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar which lasts 29 or 30 days, depending on the lunar cycle.

During the month, believers fast and pray. Muslims began observing the holy month of Ramadan in April.

Matiang’i also declared Friday April 29 a national holiday following the death of President Mwai Kibaki, presenting an opportunity for another long weekend.

On May 1, Labour Day, is a non-working day which will fall on a Sunday. As a result, it will be rescheduled for Monday, May 2.

This potentially means that if a federal servant who works Monday through Friday leaves on Thursday, April 28, the next day of work will be Wednesday, May 4.
