Tension is high in Machakos town after Machakos University students threatened to stage demonstrations to protest the killing of an Education Science Third Year student who succumbed to injuries after being accosted by thugs on Thursday last week.
Preliminary police investigations show that Duncan Kipngetich had a crashed skull. He died while receiving treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital.
He first received emergency treatment at Machakos Level V Hospital.
He was attacked around 9pm while outside the campus.
Students had threatened to take to the streets today to express their disaffection over rising cases of insecurity in the area.
“The student was badly wounded, and was rushed to the Machakos Level V Hospital before being transferred to Kenyatta National Hospital in critical condition,” said Paul Mwaniki, a student at the University.
According to a communication by the Students Association of Machakos University (SAMU), Duncan died in hospital yesterday, December 4.
“Dear Comrades, we have sadly received an information that Duncan Kipngetich (E37-6305-2020), a Third Year student pursuing Education Science (Mathematics and Chemistry) has died at the Kenyatta National Hospital. The student was admitted at the facility after being attacked brutally 2 days ago,” read the announcement by the student body.
The students have decried the rising cases of insecurity in Machakos; specifically, in Kathemboni, Eastleigh Katoloni and Kathayoni estates.
Reports indicate that many people have been attacked at night by armed thugs who steal mobile phones and money from their victims.
The students are asking the police to enhance security in the area.
