KWS ranger injured in lone buffalo attack at Tsavo West
He sustained an injury on his left leg during the attack before he was saved by his colleague who fired a warning shot at the buffalo
A Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) ranger has been hospitalised following an attack by a lone buffalo at the IPZ area in the Tsavo West National Park.
In a statement, KWS said the ranger was in the company of a colleague on a routine patrol in the area when they came under attack.
He sustained an injury on his left leg during the attack before he was saved by his colleague who fired a warning shot at the buffalo.
“During a routine patrol in the IPZ area of Tsavo West National Park, two rangers came under sudden attack from a lone buffalo. One ranger was injured in the left leg. His colleague fired a warning shot, driving the buffalo into the thicket and giving them a chance to escape,” the statement by KWS read in part.
The injured KWS ranger was quickly airlifted to St Joseph Hospital for medical attention and is in stable condition.
KWS wished the ranger a swift recovery and underscored the daily dangers rangers face in the line of duty while protecting wildlife.
“Such moments are a powerful reminder that conservation is not just about protecting wildlife, it is also about the courage, sacrifice, and resilience of women and men in boots who risk their lives on the front lines,” KWS added.
“We wish him a quick recovery and invite you to stand in solidarity with all rangers who protect Kenya’s natural heritage,” they stated.
