Speaking during a cheque presentation at the Ministry of Education headquarters in Jogoo House earlier today, Brookside Dairy Corporate Communications Manager Wilson Okong’o stated that this year, he expects bigger and better competition amongst all disciplines because school competitions was becoming attractive.

“There is value in this sponsorship we have provided today and it goes well beyond the money aspect. We want to see better sustainability through this program with talent development through school games. This year, we want to do it differently and we have identified a kit maker from Italy and each participating athlete will have two kits. More importantly, we want parity and equality in these games.”

He added: “It is important for us to see through the corporate shift through ESG (Environmental, Social & Governance) tenets in developing and encouraging sustainability. With that said, we hope to see talent scouts in Mombasa to spot and nurture talents and we have been lucky in the past to have coaches and officials from Kenya Hockey Federation (KHF) and Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) coming to check out the upcoming stars. This is encouraging and it even opens doors for scholarships abroad so sports really can change lives and we have seen with KSSSA how impactful it has been.”

Okon’go, who was flanked by KSSSA Secretary General David Ngugi and Ministry of Education Deputy Director Nelson Sifuna, also underscored the value of Federations and Educational institutions to help in supporting the agenda of sports.

“Of course we want to see more support from parents, federations and schools in this respect of building talent. We can only be conveyors but this issue requires joint efforts. Soon, on our part we will be having a strategic partner to help train students on sports and even then let us have Kenyans embrace sports for posterity as it is, Sports is at the heart of the new Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) developed by experts in government. For 22 years, we have walked together this journey because of measurable impact visible and it is our intention to continue.

At least Ksh 21.5 million of the sponsorship cash will directly to the organisers of KSSSA in facilitating the event while the remainder of the amount will go to branding, marketing and activation.
