The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU) now wants the government to introduce an annual assessment of health facilities in all prisons across the country.
KMPDU chair Samuel Oroko said the move is “long overdue” in order to address the health wanting standards in prisons.
“We appeal the government to carry out periodical basic health surveillance of all inmates incarcerated in the country. this will be a good start towards marching world health organization’s quarterly discretion,” Oroko added.
The officials pledged to visit all prison facilities in the country to offer free medical services while adducing the move to “a total grind down of prison health services”
“For sure we are going to extend these services beyond Langa’ta women’s prison. Next week we plan to visit Kamiti Maximum Prison to assess the situation,” said Oroko.
“According to our assessments the prison health standards are at an all time low but we shall endeavor to correct all the wrongs,” he added.
Oroko was addressing journalists during a free medical checkup for inmates at Langa’ta Women’s Prison organised by KMPDU.
