IPOA probes Majengo killings as officer is interdicted
Chairman Issak Hassan indicated that key statements have already been recorded as they even attended the postmortems of the two deceased victims
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched investigations into the shooting of two people including a form three student in Majengo area of Nairobi.
The first shooting occurred on Tuesday evening which prompted protests by residents leading to the second shooting which happened yesterday.
“IPOA is investigating shooting incidents involving police officers from Shauri Moyo Police Station, located in Starehe,” the IPOA Chairperson Issak Hassan said in a statement.
Issak indicated that key statements have already been recorded as they even attended the postmortems of the two deceased victims.
“The investigation is ongoing, with the Authority having already recorded key statements, attended one postmortem examination, and scheduled to attend another today,” he added.
IPOA further called upon Kenyans not to take the law in their own hands and to refrain from any acts of lawlessness.
“There was extensive destruction of property including Government buildings and motor vehicles. The Authority’s rapid response and forensic investigations team accompanied by officers specialised in monitoring police conduct during public order management operations responded to the incident. The team has been tasked with gathering all relevant information to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting and assessing how the police handled the demonstrators,” Hassan added.
This comes as the Inspector General of National Police Service Douglas Kanja has taken disciplinary action against an officer accused of shooting a high school student.
Police Spokesman Michael Muchiri disclosed that the officer involved in the shooting had been disarmed and interdicted pending a probe.
Separately, the Authority stated that a team was yesterday dispatched to monitor police conduct during the management of public order during the demonstrations that have been ongoing at Kakuma refugee camp.
Several people have been critically injured after a peaceful protest at the Kakuma refugee camp turned chaotic earlier today.
The protests turned violent after police officers attempted to disburse the aggressive protesters who were marching toward the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Office at the camp.
The protests, which began a week ago, were staged by the refugees who urged to reinstate essential supplies that were cut due to funding disruptions.
