IG Koome condemn police officer caught on viral video harassing motorist
Inspector General of Police Japheth Koome has condemned a police officer who was caught on video harassing and threatening a member of public while armed and appearing intoxicated.
The IG through a statement said that the behavior depicted by the police officer was intolerable and sent a warning to other officers who are found to abuse their powers.
“As a service, we are gravely concerned by, and strongly condemns, the misconduct displayed by the Officer. It should be clear that NPS shall not condone or protect any officer found engaging in abuse of his/her powers and/or privileges, or any other action that can bring disrepute to the image of the Police,” he noted.
He further noted that the behavior of the aforementioned officer does not portray the core values of NPS and their commitment to serving members of the public.
“We regret the incident and reiterates that the behaviour exhibited by the said Officer does not reflect the core values of NPS, more so during this reform period where we are focused on, and commitment to fostering and promoting good police-community relations, as enshrined in the Constitution of Kenya,” he added.
According to the IG, the officer in question has been identified and the incident currently being reviewed for appropriate internal disciplinary action.
Cases of police officers harassing members of the public is not new in the country.
