I am going nowhere, DP Kindiki says as 2027 political waterloo looms
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has declared that his seat not available for negotiation even as his boss President William Ruto seeks to woo his Broad-Based Government partners, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) which has now split into rival factions.
ODM has maintained that they are not taking anything less than the DP’s post if they have to support President Ruto in his 2027 reelection bid.
This puts DP Kindiki and his boss on a collision course given that the Mt. Kenya region where Kindiki comes from has growingly become restive after the impeachment of Rigathi Gachagua as DP and has since formed the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) as one of the United Opposition affiliate parties seeking to unseat Ruto next year.
Speaking today in Kariene town, Central Imenti Constituency, Meru County, the Deputy President dismissed speculation about his political future, stating that he remains committed to delivering on the government’s development agenda.
“I am the Deputy President. This seat is going nowhere, and when we are done with the second term, we will progress ahead in search of the higher office,” he said.
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has affirmed that he is fully focused on executing his constitutional mandate while supporting President William Ruto in securing a second term in the upcoming General Election.
His remarks come amid increasing pressure from a faction of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) demanding the deputy president’s position should they formalize a coalition arrangement with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
Kindiki stated he will not engage in what he described as premature political maneuvering, reiterating that effective leadership requires a strategic balance between governance and politics.
“As a veteran politician, we know when to talk, when to do politics and when to work for the people. It will not be engaging in idle talk every day because we have a lot to do for the people,” he noted.
The Deputy President described himself as a seasoned politician who understands when to engage in politics and when to focus on service delivery.
He emphasised that his current priority is to accelerate development projects and ensure the completion of ongoing initiatives to improve the lives of wananchi.
“It is about what you have done for the people because, in the end, it will be what you delivered to them,” he added.
Kindiki highlighted several key projects underway in Meru County that are scheduled for completion before the next elections including multiple road projects recently launched and progressing on schedule.
He said the upgrading of Meru Referral Hospital to Level 6 status is on course, while the redesign of Nithi Bridge will commence soon.
The construction of Gakoromone Modern Market in Meru town is also ongoing and is expected to become the largest market in the country upon completion.
