Githu Muigai to lead IEBC legal team ahead of Supreme court showdown

Former Attorney General Githu Muigai is expected to lead a team of legal minds in representing the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) in the presidential petition expected to be lodged by Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition.

Muigai will lead a team of 10 lawyers who will defend the IEBC commissioners led by chairman Wafula Chebukati.

The other Commissioners on Chebukati’s side are commissioner Abdi Guliye, Boya Molu and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Marjan Hussein Marjan.

Githu will be joined other lawyers in his team namely, Senior Counsels Kamau Karori and Abdikadir Mohamed, Eric Gumbo, Wambua Kilonzo, Peter Wanyama, George Murugu, Mahat Somane, Cyprian Wekesa and Edwin Mukele.

Azimio presidential candidate Raila Odinga is expected to challenge the election results as announced by Chebukati this week as Kenyans hold their breath to see the outcome of the seven supreme court judges.

Raila’s political nemesis United Democratic Alliance’s William Ruto who was declared winner is the main challenger in the court process.

According to the results released by Chebukati, Ruto garnered 7,176,141 (50.49%) votes against Raila’s 6,942,930 (48.85%).

Azimio disputed the results, alleging favouritism towards Ruto by the IEBC chairman.

Four IEBC commissioners have since disowned the presidential results include Juliana Cherera (Vice chairperson), Justus Nyang’aya, Francis Wanderi and Irene Masit.

The four according to the recent press briefing have a different representation from what Chebukati announced to the anxiously waiting Kenyans.
