Orwoba accuses UDA of being ‘ruthless’ as Senate seat declared vacant despite court orders
She pointed out that she is yet to receive communication from Registrar of Political Parties regarding her status
Gloria Orwoba has protested the manner the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) is hounding her out of the Senate after her expulsion from the ruling party.
She took issue with the move by Senate Speaker Amason Kingi to issue a notice in the official Kenya Gazzette declaring her nominated seat vacant even before receiving communication from the Registrar of Political Parties, which she says was aimed at thwarting her efforts to have the courts quash her expulsion.
This was after High Court Judge Lawrence Mugambi granted the senator a conservatory order suspending the implementation of the UDA Disciplinary Committee dated May 16 expelling her as a member of the party and/or a nominated senator.
“For instance, the orders were issued same time the Gazette was released. The speaker Amason Kingi was served physically through his office and on WhatsApp at 2:03 PM but on opening of the session he ignored the orders and declared the Vacancy. In less than an hour from his declaration, IEBC will Gazette the new nominee despite two court orders. Note that there has been NO communication from Registrar of Political parties to me before all these actions were taken,” she wrote.
“It is notified for the general information of the public that pursuant to Article 101 (2) of the Constitution of Kenya, a seat of the Member of the Senate elected under Article 98 (1) (b) of the Constitution, held by Senator Gloria Orwoba, has become vacant with effect from the 21st May, 2025,” Kingi said in the notice.
In issuing the conservatory order, Justice Mugambi said further directions will be issued on June 3.
Orwoba had moved to court on Tuesday under a certificate of urgency but Justice Mugambi initially declared the application incompetent, citing procedural irregularities.
UDA’s National Executive Committee (NEC) on Monday unanimously approved the recommendation by the party’s Disciplinary Committee, which found her guilty of several counts of misconduct, including making public statements that harmed the party’s image and repeatedly failing to respond to disciplinary charges.
She had been summoned to answer to charges relating to her presence at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to welcome former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i when he returned from the United States last month and criticism of the government’s labour migration programme.
However, she received a court order stopping the process from continuing, which was also ignored.
The ruling party, instead, nominated Consolata Wabwire Wakwabubi, who hails from Kimilili in Bungoma, to replace her.
But Orwoba remains defiant, saying that following Justice Mugambi’s order, all actions taken on the strength of the disciplinary committee’s decision is null and void.
“All actions taken subsequent of the orders issued on May 16th 2025 are NULL & VOID,” she wrote on her Facebook page.
Orwoba, who has declared her interest in the Bobasi constituency seat in the next elections, had earlier supporters to remain calm and stop speculating and, instead, wait for her final word
“Asante for those encouraging messages from the thousands of followers and supporters. Worry not, some of us didn’t join politics to make money, those characters are the ones conning Kenyans Chap Chap with Fake Diaspora Jobs. I joined politics to be a positive change maker…and so far, so good. There is a reason hawa watu wanakimbia ma round mwenda na wasi wasi…mambo bado. Si bure watu wamenyamaza. Be patient. Na Siasa weka kwa lungs, otherwise utakufa bure uwache wanasiasa wakipiga siasa kwa matanga,” she wrote on her Facebook page earlier today.
However, in her latest post, Orwoba appears to have acknowledged that UDA is determined to remove her and has instead urged her supporters to prepare for “war”.
