Former President Mwai Kibaki passes on aged 90

Former President Mwai Kibaki is dead.

President Kibaki will remain in history as the politician who challenged the late president Daniel Arap Moi’s regime during his 24-year rule and eventually took the reins of power in a historical election in 2002 under the National Rainbow Coalition.

Kibaki was a leader focused on eliminating corruption which was rampant during the past reins. So bad was the state that foreign aid was withdrawn.

President Kibaki restored the state to an extent that Kenyans embraced anti-corruption norms, while strengthening the economy.

President Emilio Mwai Kibaki was born on November 15 in 1931 in Thunguri village in Nyeri county.

He was the youngest son of Kibaki Githinji and Teresia Wanjiku and had 4 siblings.

Unfortunately, Kibaki was too lazy to farm, and his siblings labeled him unproductive.

So, when the missionary walking around wooing parents to let them take children to school came by, Kibaki, in his youthful stage, was “recused” from the tedious work at the farm.

It was there where he nourished his love for education and grew his Roman Catholic faith.

Surprisingly at the age of 8, Kibaki had started learning catechism and elementary education.

He was a top achiever, always topped in his class, and a little mischievous; occasionally, he would taste the bitter thrush from teachers under colonial rule by the British.
