First Lady Rachel Ruto condoles with Murang’a family that lost 16 members in Kikopey road crash

First Lady Rachel Ruto today joined mourners in Kahiga village, Murang’a County, for a requiem mass in honor of 16 family members who perished in a tragic road accident along the Nakuru–Nairobi highway.
The mass, held at St. Andrews Kahiga Catholic Church, brought together leaders, clergy, and hundreds of residents still reeling from the devastating loss that struck the community on September 28.
The victims had been traveling to Rongai, Nakuru County, to visit a sick relative when their vehicle was involved in the fatal crash at Kikopey.
Condoling with the bereaved, the First Lady urged the family to draw strength from their faith and remain united during this difficult period.
“Our presence today is to be with you, to encourage you and tell you there is God in heaven who wipes away our tears,” she said.
“Whatever has happened has happened. Do not abandon the practice of standing together as a family. Fear may come, but this is the time to remain united,” she added.
The First Lady further appealed to Kenyans to embrace unity and solidarity, noting that “a united people can overcome any challenge.”
President William Ruto also sent his condolences, assuring the family of the nation’s prayers and support, while describing the tragedy as “a painful moment for the country.”
Several leaders, including Kandara MP Chege Njuguna, Murang’a Woman Representative Betty Maina, Nominated MP Sabina Chege, Maragua MP Mary Wa Maua, Nominated Senator Veronica Maina and Kangema MP Peter Kihungi, were also present.
The legislators pledged continued support to the affected family, including scholarships for children left behind.
“The entire constituency is in mourning. We will ensure the children receive full scholarships through the bursary kitty,” said MP Njuguna.
Maina and Kihungi emphasized the importance of both financial and emotional support, calling on well-wishers to step forward with assistance.
As Kahiga village mourns, the community remains shaken, struggling to come to terms with a loss that has been described as one of the most devastating tragedies in recent memory.
