Farmers Party announces Kenya Kwanza exit
It cites lack of consultation before formation of broad-based government
One of Kenya Kwanza Alliance affiliate partners-Farmers Party of Kenya has sent a notice of exit from the coalition due to alleged dishonesty.
A letter seen by the Informer Media Group accuses the coalition of disregarding both the Constitution and agreement signed by its affiliates, adding that it would no longer be party to any dealings with Kenya Kwanza.
The correspondence copied to the Registrar of Political Parties, alongside the Secretary-Generals of Ford-Kenya, United Democratic Alliance and Amani National Congress, added that political infidelity would not be acceptable to the party, which is led by former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu, who is currently serving a jail term for corruption.
“On 23rd March, 2022, Farmers Party entered into a Coalition Agreement with like-minded parties under the Kenya Kwanza Coalition. We did so in good faith, with a shared vision of empowering our farmers, guaranteeing fair prices for their produce and uplifting the living standards of ordinary Kenyans through a principled, people-centred economic transformation.”
“Our belief in the binding commitments of the Coalition’s manifesto guided our participation. However, it is with deep regret that we note a consistent pattern of dishonesty, political infidelity and outright disregard for both the Constitution of Kenya (2010) and the spirit of our Coalition Agreement,” stated part of the letter from Framers Party Secretary-General Simon Kamangu and dated April, 8, 2025.
The recent agreement and partnership between President William Ruto and ODM Leader Raila Odinga is what appeared to stir the hornets’ nest and left a couple of insiders within Kenya Kwanza uncomfortable. Framers Party has now come out to label the arrangement as an act of “political conmanship”
“The recent unilateral signing of a Broad-Based Government Agreement between the Kenya Kwanza Coalition and the ODM Party-without consultation or involvement of the Kenya-Kwanza constituent parties such as ours-is the final confirmation of the political conmanship that has become to define the coalition. This move not only violates the trust upon which our coalition was founded, but also undermines the principles of inclusivity, transparency and mutual respect.”
Accordingly, the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Farmers Party met on April 7,2025 and unanimously resolved on the subject matter. Therefore, Farmers Party hereby issues a 30 day notice of intention to exit the Kenya Kwanza Coalition, pursuant to Clause 8 (Termination) of the Coalition Agreement.
